Closet organization tips and healthy living advice have a lot in common, as do their wonderful benefits. Don’t let your closet weigh you down! Check out some of our favorite ways to organize a closet and turn your cluttered wardrobe into the functional storage space it’s meant to be.

You’ll have much easier access to your clothes, and better yet, all that the decluttering and cleaning will help take some weight off your shoulders.

Closet Organization Ideas

Start with a clean slate.

Whether you are overhauling your diet or your closet, the process is the same: eliminate what is getting in the way of your health and happiness. One of the best ways to organize your closet is to start fresh by decluttering. That’s right; you’re going to take every single item out of your closet and clean it. Vacuum or sweep the closet floor, wipe down the shelves and ledges, and clean scuff marks and grime off the walls.

Then it’s time to get rid of some clothes.

A simple way to declutter your clothes is to go through them by category. Separate your clothes into like items: pants make one pile, dresses another, and so on. Once you have all your piles sorted, go through each pile before moving on to the next. It’s so much easier comparing clothes from the same category when you’re deciding what to keep and what to toss.

This does two things:

  1. It irreversibly gets you started.
  2. It forces you to assess everything you are putting back.

This is an important step, and it will take space and a lot of time. Make sure to block off both.

Assess your storage situation.

Learning how to organize a closet means understanding what storage options your closet offers. Here are some questions to get you started:

  1. What assets does your closet have?
  2. Does it feature lots of hanging space? Do you use it?
  3. Is there potential for side shelves or boxed storage above or below?
  4. Could you add shelves, racks, and other storage solutions to improve how you use the space?

Reduce your closet inventory.

You may feel selfish for not wanting to throw anything away. That’s okay. Feel those emotions and then let them go, along with the jeans that are three sizes too big or small and the shoes that kill your feet. Remember, you should go through each pile from start to finish.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does it make me happy when I wear it?
  2. Does it fit like it should?
  3. Can I remember the last time I wore it?
  4. Could someone else get better use out of it?
  5. Is it damaged or in need of tailoring?

Okay, pep talk over, now it’s time to do the heavy lifting. Working in garbage bags or piles, segment the following:

A donate or sell pile

You can break this into two piles if you’re planning to do a bit of both. Remember that clothes you give away will be worth so much more to the people who will actually wear them.

A trash pile

For torn, unfixable items and things like underwear. Reuse what you can for rags.

A fix pile

For items that need to be dry cleaned, hemmed, or otherwise repaired.

Your kept items will go right back into the closet, but not just yet. Keep reading to learn the best way to organize a closet.

The Best Way to Organize Your Closet

Once your closet is lean and clean, it’s time to get things organized. It’s important to note that you’ll need to know how to organize clothes, before you can tackle your closet.

Store your clothes by category.

Keep like items together to make your closet look tidy and your clothes easier to find. Unless you have room in your home for seasonal clothing storage, store off-season clothing in the far reaches of your closet and the clothes you wear most often toward the front.

Not every piece of clothing deserves a hanger!

One of the best ways to keep closets organized is to only hang up clothes that have to have a hanger. Dresses, lingerie, suits, and dress shirts should be stored on hangers, but the rest of your clothes can be stored more efficiently.

Use matching hangers.

If you want to give your closet a streamlined look, use matching hangers. This may seem like a small thing, but once you see it in place, you’ll see what we mean. And cheap plastic hangers won’t do!. Choose velvet hangers for delicate dresses and tops and attractive wooden hangers for outerwear and heavy suits.

Stack sturdy clothing.

Save drawer and closet rod space by stacking sweaters, jeans, and other bulky items. Sturdy, thick fabrics won’t lose their shape when you stack them so you can make the most of your vertical closet space. Plus, your neat stacks will look great and make it easier to find your favorites.
