How to Clean Your Jewelry at Home:
Simple Solutions for Keeping Your Pieces Shining

March 24, 2021

Jewelry accounts for some of our most prized possessions. Because of their worth- both sentimental and in terms of value- it’s important to take great care of these treasures.

The wear and tear of everyday life does a number on our decorative pieces. Jewelry begins to lose its luster when it’s constantly exposed to the elements; dust, dirt, lotions, soap, and moisture can cause dullness.

The good news is that it’s easy to restore their gleam, even at home! Try these simple tips and tricks, including DIY jewelry cleaner, to keep your items shiny and sparkling.

How often should jewelry be cleaned?

The amount of wear your item gets needs to be considered when it comes to a jewelry cleaning schedule. For high-wear pieces like an engagement ring, you should consider cleaning it about once a week or every two weeks. Diamonds can dull easily as they are exposed to daily hand washing and lotion. Aside from diamonds, other pieces can be cleaned when they appear cloudy and need some extra shine.

How to Clean Jewelry

Diamonds: Use a few drops of a mild cleaning detergent, mixed with warm water; this makes an effective jewelry cleaning solution. Soak your diamond piece for a few minutes to begin. Then, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the item. Rinse with clean water and pat dry.

Another option for cleaning diamond pieces is soaking them in club soda. Allow for several hours of soaking, rinse with water, pat dry, and voila!

Pearls: Take a clean, cotton cloth and dampen it slightly using a solution of warm water mixed with a couple drops of mild dish soap. Use the cloth to gently rub each piece of pearl jewelry individually. Allow the item to air-dry; do not soak pearls.

Silver: You don’t necessarily need silver polish to keep your silver pieces lustrous.  For a simple silver jewelry cleaner, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Use a soft cloth to dip into the solution and rub on the silver. Rinse with clean water and dry with a different soft cloth.

For items with heavier tarnish, create a solution made with three parts baking soda to one part water. Dampen the silver and then apply the paste; use a lint-free cloth to scrub the paste into the item. Follow with rinsing and buffing to dry.

Gold: Mix together a solution with a few drops of mild dish soap and warm water. Place your gold items in a small basin and allow them to soak in the solution for five minutes. After removing them, place them on a cloth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently rub the crevices of each item. Rinse the pieces and buff dry with a soft cloth.

Properly Care for Your Jewelry

In addition to tending to cleanliness, there are other steps that can be taken to care for your treasured jewelry.

  • Take off your rings when you wash hands, apply skincare products, use home cleaning solutions, handle lotion, etc. These items can introduce hard to reach grime.
  • Store silver in an anti-tarnish bag.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry while swimming.
  • Have your nicer items routinely checked by a reputable jeweler. They can make sure that stones and settings are secure.
