It’s 2019, and if you’re like us, you’ve resolved to have a clean house for the new year. You’ve made a plan (thanks to some past blogs of ours 😉), and now all you need to do is stick to it. New year cleaning doesn’t have to be one of those resolutions that gets dumped come the end of January, we’ve got your back. Stick to these tips and it’ll feel like a New Year, New Home.
Practical Tips to Continually Keep it Clean
Create a cleaning schedule.
Our lives run on a schedule already because it’s comforting to know what we have coming, so creating a cleaning schedule makes sense. Pick a day for laundry, changing bedding, cleaning the floors, etc. Reread this blog for some great advice about making your own housecleaning schedule.
Stash cleaning equipment around your home.
Don’t get us wrong, an organized and fully-stocked cleaning closet is a thing of beauty but it doesn’t hurt to sprinkle some extra scrubbing power around your home. Each bathroom should have its own toilet brush and cleaner plus disposable cleaning cloths for quick wipe-ups. If you live on more than one floor, make sure each level has the basics: garbage bags, all-purpose cleaner and a broom.
Reorganize your common areas.
Every house has it; the one place clutter seems to land – the kitchen, the entryway, the living room. Set out trays and baskets for keys and backpacks. Use a wall-mounted organizer to sort mail. Make a rule to put shoes away the moment anyone steps inside. Once it becomes a habit to keep common areas clean, you’ll notice how much nicer your home looks.
Clean as you cook.
Kitchens are notoriously one of the messiest spots in the house and as open concept homes become more popular, that mess is on view 24/7. Instead of eating out or ordering in to miss the mess, clean while you cook. Check back in with this blog, how to clean up the holiday cooking mess, for tips on how to keep the kitchen clean, even if you’re cooking all day. Always empty the dishwasher before dinner and give everyone a job at the end of the meal to make clean-up go even faster; the smallest helpers can pick up their own plates.
Set yourself up for success.
Little tasks, done with forethought, are big helpers for keeping your home tidy. Keep extra trash bags in the bottom of the bin so there’s always a fresh one ready. Force yourself fold the laundry as soon as it comes out of the dryer – you’ll save on ironing. Pull out the garbage bin or have a small bag for garage on the counter while you cook. Spend 10 minutes before bed to fold throw blankets, toss garbage, put away electronics and fill up the dishwasher.
