Laundry Room Organization
and Cleaning

February 15, 2021

Laundry rooms are often the smallest room in the home, but they see more than their fair share of dirt, odors, and clutter. Whether it’s counters packed with cleaners, cabinets stuffed with who-knows-what, or the ever-present piles of dirty clothes, doing laundry can be more of a hassle than it needs to be. But when you use this laundry room organization and cleaning guide, you can have a clean laundry room with plenty of elbow room and easy access to your regular laundry supplies.

How to Clean a Laundry Room

Grab a vacuum, extendable duster, microfiber cloths, and mix up some eco-friendly all-purpose cleaner and disinfectant. Your strategy to clean the laundry room is to work from the top down to dust, clean, and sanitize.

  • Remove everything from shelves, cabinets, and counters and put them on the kitchen counter.
  • Use an extendable duster to dust light fixtures, vents, the ceiling fan, and get the cobwebs out of the corners.
  • Dust the tops of doors and window frames, then clean the doors with your all-purpose cleaner. Clean both sides of windows using equal parts of distilled white vinegar and water.
  • Wipe down shelves and countertops with the all-purpose cleaner.
  • Clean cabinet doors and drawer fronts with all-purpose cleaner, then disinfect the handles and pulls, doorknobs, and switch plates.
  • Vacuum the lint filter trap, around and under appliances, baseboards, and floor.
  • Damp mop the floor and the baseboards with your all-purpose cleaner.
  • Give your washer and dryer a deep cleaning every few months.

Laundry Room Organization Ideas

Like bathroom and kitchen organizing, laundry room organization starts with decluttering. You already have everything pulled out, so once you’ve completed your laundry room cleaning checklist, it’s time to sort, purge, and organize.

  • Go through your non-laundry supplies, tools, and whatever else you had stuffed into cabinets and drawers.
  • Find another home for items you don’t use for laundry or store them above or behind your detergents, stain removers, and other laundry supplies.
  • Store your laundry supplies within easy reach of your washer and dryer using the closest cabinets and other storage areas.
  • Use baskets and bins to group your detergents, stain removers, fabric softeners, etc. together for quick access.
  • Invest in a three-section hamper for pre-sorting whites, darks, and colors.
  • Install a foldable drying rack you can easily store when it’s not in use.
  • Take advantage of the space behind the laundry room door by hanging a rack with shelves, hooks, and other storage components.
  • Add a laundry guard to your washer and dryer to keep clean clothes from falling behind or beside your appliances.

When you’re finished, step back and admire your organized and clean laundry room. It almost looks like doing laundry could even be enjoyable (almost!).
