How to Get
Crayon Off Walls

February 25, 2024

You love for your kids to be creative and stay busy, but sometimes their “creativity” ends up on clothes, floors, walls, and almost everywhere else. Learning how to get crayon off walls and handle other challenging messes like a pro can help you keep your sanity! Crayon marks aren’t as easy to remove as cleaning up fingerprints or dirt on your walls. Fortunately, there are plenty of handy tips for how to clean crayon off walls. (Always spot-test your cleaning solution of choice by testing it on an inconspicuous area to ensure it won’t cause any damage or discoloration.)

Get your walls looking as good as new. Here are field-tested cleaners for getting crayon off walls with minimal effort.

How to Get Crayon Off Walls Using Non-Toxic Cleaners

Because The Maids® cleans for health specifically, we always recommend starting with the mildest and safest cleaners for any cleaning project. When learning how to erase crayon on walls, non-toxic, natural DIY cleaners are the way to go. The cleaning solutions are simple to make using common household ingredients and can clean as well as harsh chemical cleaners.

Compared to commercial cleaners, homemade cleaning solutions are better for your health and typically less expensive. Because the ingredients are mild, these natural cleaners are also less likely to damage paint when cleaning walls. Here is how you can remove crayon marks safely:

Soap And Water

Before searching for the latest cleaning tips on how to get crayon off the walls, or any other kid-related messes, try good old soap and water. You only need microfiber cloths, grease-fighting liquid dish soap, and patience.

  3. Take your time and use light pressure, or you could end up repainting
  4. Rinse your cleaning cloth frequently to avoid smearing crayon marks.
  5. Wipe off any remaining soap residue with the damp cloth.

Mr. Clean® Magic Erasers

Melamine foam scrubbers are powerful tools for removing dirt and grime from many surfaces. Magic Erasers are even recommended by Crayola for removing crayon marks from your walls! Here’s how to clean crayon off walls and let Mr. Clean take on most of the work.

  1. Dampen your Magic Eraser and wring it out
  2. Lightly rub the crayon marks from side to side and up and down.
  3. Flip the eraser over as one side of the eraser becomes dirty.
  4. You may need multiple Magic Erasers if the crayon damage is extensive.
  5. Wipe off any remaining cleaning residue with a damp microfiber cloth.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is known for its versatility as well as being a natural cleaner. Most households have them! From odor control to removing stains, baking soda is essential in every home. To help erase those crayon marks off your walls, grab some microfiber cloths, a bowl, and some baking soda.

  1. In a bowl, create a thick paste by mixing baking soda and water.
  2. Use a damp microfiber towel to apply the paste to the crayon marks
  3. Rub the crayon marks side to side and up and down using steady pressure.
  4. Wipe off the gritty residue with a clean, damp microfiber cloth.

Vinegar

You may already be using vinegar to clean other areas of your home, like your kitchen or bathroom. This safe and natural cleaner can be used on many surfaces, including walls. To remove crayon marks off walls, you need distilled white vinegar, an old toothbrush, and microfiber cloths

  1. Dip a toothbrush into vinegar and gently scrub the crayon marks.
  2. Use just enough pressure to remove the crayon—not the paint! It’s important to take your time with this step.
  3. Wipe the residue off with a damp microfiber cloth.
  4. Optional: You can add a drop or two of your favorite essential oil to the cloth if the vinegar aroma bothers you.

How to Clean Crayon Off Walls When You Need More Firepower

Sometimes, your walls just need a little more TLC, especially when you have a colorful mural on your hands. When a gentle cleaner isn’t doing the trick, it’s time for something tougher.

Goo Gone

If used correctly, Goo Gone is a potent adhesive and marker remover that is safe to use in your home. To get started, grab the following items: Goo Gone, a clean microfiber cloth, paper towels, and soapy water in a bowl. (Tip: don’t put the Goo Gone directly on your walls!)

  1. Apply some Goo Gone onto a folded paper towel.
  2. Rub the crayon marks with firm pressure.
  3. Avoid scrubbing too hard, or you could remove paint.
  4. Clean off the oily residue using a microfiber cloth and soapy water.
  5. Using a clean and damp microfiber cloth, wipe down the wall.

Glass Cleaner

Glass cleaner with ammonia is ideal for removing crayon from walls. However, it can affect your eyes, skin, and lungs, so goggles, gloves, and a facemask are recommended. You’ll need a glass cleaner and a couple of microfiber towels.

  1. Directly spray the glass cleaner on the crayon marks and wipe off the excess
  2. Let the ammonia break down the marks for five minutes.
  3. Once the marks begin to fade, gently rub off the crayon with a damp cloth.

WD-40

Maybe the most potent solution aside from repainting your walls, WD-40 is safe if you follow the label directions. It’s best to open a window for ventilation and wear a facemask. You’ll need WD-40, paper towels, soap and water, and microfiber cloths

  1. Spray a small amount of WD-40 on a folded paper towel.
  2. Gently rub the crayon marks and switch to a fresh paper towel as needed
  3. Clean off the residue with soap and water.
  4. Wipe down the wall using a damp microfiber cloth.
