The first year in business is always tough. But The Maids of Ajax, Ontario, managed to thrive during its first year. It was named Start Up of the Year at The Maids' 2009 International Convention in Omaha, Neb., on April 18. The Maids is a residential cleaning franchise that cleans for health.

The Start Up of the Year award recognizes The Maids franchise whose first calendar year in business was during 2008 and has found early success among the more than 164 Maids franchises in U.S. and Canada. Every year The Maids franchise partners from across the U.S. and Canada attend the international convention to attend business sessions, share ideas with other franchises, and recognize outstanding employees and franchise partners.

"It feels fantastic to win this," said franchise partner Lynn Mulroy. "It reinforces all the hard work we have done during this first year in business."

Mulroy attributes the franchise's success to determination, perseverance, optimism and enthusiasm. She feels that practicing each of these things helped the franchise succeed.

"We have tried to focus on hiring the right people, providing quality customer service and recognizing our employees," she said. "The first year in business can be very difficult, but we were able to focus as a franchise and accomplished a lot of good things."

She said she has learned a lot during her first year operating her franchise and looks forward to continuing her success with The Maids.

"This award has been very encouraging for the franchise," she said. "It shows that we are headed in the right direction. We are eager to move forward with our business and continue to do well."
