This month, Sean and Lynn Mulroy, owners of The Maids of Durham Region, Ontario, celebrate five years of making homes shine throughout their community.  Though research suggests that a large percentage of small businesses don’t survive past five years, The Maids serving Durham Region continues to experience notable growth.  The franchise is located at 97 McMaster Avenue in Ajax and serves the areas in and around the Durham Region including Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Claremont, Brooklin, Port Perry and Uxbridge.

The Maids serving Durham Region opened in February of 2008, thriving in its first year and recognized as Start-up of the Year at The Maids International convention.  Since then, the franchise has performed nearly 11,500 cleans at a rate of approximately 250 cleans per month.  Last year, the franchise served almost 2,800 homes.  

“We operate with three or four teams of four cleaning professionals,” describes Mulroy.  “But, recently, we sent out five teams for the first time.  It was a great milestone to achieve.  We’re planning to have five teams on a regular basis by the end of this year.”

With a background in sales, Sean has operated a successful brick restoration business for the past 16 years. Prior to opening The Maids, Lynn was a vice president of human resources in the financial services sector in both Canada and the U.K.  She attributes her franchise’s success to determination, optimism and having the right people in the right positions.
 
“Because of my experience in human resources, I’ve been able to create a work environment to attract and retain the best cleaning teams in the business,” shares Lynn.  “Consistently providing superior quality results can only be achieved with the right team leaders and assistant team leaders in place.  We strive to ensure that we have well-trained people in these roles, and that they relentlessly focus on quality and customer service.”

Currently, The Maids has 15 employees, all of whom were hand-picked by Lynn.  Three have been with the company for over four years and one has been there since the grand opening.  The Mulroys focus on training and implementing quality checks to ensure the complete satisfaction of every customer. 

“When looking back, the time has flown by,” shares Lynn. “In our first year we achieved very rapid growth before the economy took a turn for the worse. We managed to weather the storm, steadily growing a strong and loyal regular customer base. Our goal is to continue to grow by nurturing a strong workforce dedicated to the business. We want to become the provider of choice in our market.”
