Adapted from the Danbury News-Times article, entitled "Maid Service looking to clean up," by Mark Langlois (10.8.02)
As Chris Rudolph approached 20 years of owning the Exxon service station... on Federal Road, he started thinking about another line of work.
"I was still getting under some cars in the garage," Rudolph said. "I was pretty tired of it after 20 years."
Rudolph decided to sell his share of the station to his partner and find another venture. He picked a home cleaning service. Now he and his wife, Sue, and their daughter, Kristi, are running the franchise The Maids Serving Danbury.
The home cleaning service is [four years] old and it has [225] regular customers.
"I was looking for a business I might be able to build up and work in when I get older," Rudolph said. He said he could work in the office, handle sales or recruit staff.
Rudolph said he has [five] teams of four people now working in the greater Danbury area and in Litchfield County. A team of four arrives together in the same station wagon to clean a customer's house.
One works on the vacuuming, one cleans the kitchen, one cleans the bathrooms and one dusts... On the next house, they switch tasks.
"We dust every horizontal surface, including picture frames," Rudolph said. "We clean the kitchen and bathroom [floors] on hands and knees."
Rudolph said The Maids uses "Healthy Touch" cleaning products, which are non-toxic. He said the vacuums the company remove dust as small as 1/210th the diameter of a human hair width.
"People dont' want you to clean their house with chemicals," Rudolph said.
For a special fee, The Maids also will do specific cleaning projects such as carpet cleaning, window cleaning or deep cleaning floors.
